Old style motor factors, or try a land rover garage, they use loads of nipples.

How many are you going to put per side? One close to each bearing, or one in between the bearings?

Just my two pence worth, but I would put them between the two bearings else you'd have to fill the whole beam of grease before being able to purge the old stuff out.

You know that already I'm sure.

Makes sense and I've never actually been inside a rear beam but..

..surely if you don't fill the rear beam with grease then it's just going to move away from the bearings anyway ??

Or am I wrong? Just thinking....

theres 2 bearings on each side if you put it between them it should be mostly held in place

I guess you're right. If it's packed in there it's certainley gonna be better than none at all.

Do you reckon it's worth doing even if you're not rebuilding the beam?

No one every thought that drilling a hole in the beam might push swarf into the bearings and wreck them?

From the beam re-builds I've seen on here it seems that it isn't the bearings at fault when they collapse but rather the water seals at the end of the beam. Once the water seals go then by by bearings - correct me if I'm wrong!

What i've done is to drill a hole in the middle of the tube towards the top, squirted some oil in and covered the hole witha large cable tie.

As the car goes round corners the oil keeps the bearings lubricated.

Well, this is what I did to my 306 :D:wacko:

Sorry, this picture was taken without the car being jacked up, so its a bit dodgy... Here is another:

Again, dodgy image.

It gives you an idea of where the nipples should ideally be situated (between the bearings).

I pumped them so full of grease, on the drivers side grease was pushed out of the rubber water seal.

I simply drilled a small 2 mm pilot hole, working my way up to the size of the tap, making sure I was removing as much of the swarf as possible. Tap the hole, screw in the nipple and pump full of grease, simple!!!

Quite cheap from motor parts shops or halfords etc.

Yep, used a grease gun (pump, whatever you want to call it). You will also need a grease cartrdige for the gun. I managed to get mine from a mate who lives next door and works on a farm, the blue grease is 'JCB Special Grease' which they use on all the machinery :D

Last time I looked, a grease gun was about £12 in halfords and the cartridge about £4.

So what's the general consensus on this?

Good idea / Bad idea ??

anything that lengthens the life of the bearings has to be good hasnt it?

Sounds like you need "The Nipple Shop" at hle.co.uk (just clear your browser history before your other half sees it.......)

The old trick for drilling and tapping without filling assemblies with swarf is to grease the drill and the tap liberally with nice sticky grease and to wipe clean at regular intervals. It's usually possible to get away with no swarf ingress to the bearings at all.

When I did mine, I only used about half a cartridge for both sides.
