With the wishbones, ideally you shouldnt be able to move the ball joint with finger and thumb, should be very stiff, check the bushes for any perishing or signs of deteriation, put a big screw driver through them and lever them and check for movement. When checking the hubs just look at the hole where the ball joint enters it should basically be perfectly round, they often wear creating the oval shape. Check the wheel bearings aswell although these can be replaced. Make sure when you fit them you re-new the pinch bolts.

with the wishbones you need to check the bushes at the inboard end (may as well take the opportunity to renew them even if they do seem ok) and you need to check the balljoint to make sure it doesn't have any freeplay in it; ideally it should feel fairly stiff but so long as you can't move it up and down in the cup, it should be serviceable.

the hubs are a bit more difficult to call - check that the hole into which the lower arm balljoint pin fits isn't ovalled and also check the wheel bearing as best you can - it should spin cleanly in either direction and a little perpendicular play is normal.

ed. not quick enough!

You should really concentrate only on balljoint, as mentioned above.

Bushings can be replaced and it is highly recommended that you do so.
