right now my brains working over time and it hurts! got a few options just cant make up my mind.basicly i got 1 nice mi16 and 1 rotten 1,theres a 1.9 gti available near by and a 1.6 gti available!both similar price, im not sure whether to get a new 1, but then which 1? iv always prefered the 1.9s but the 1.6s are more favoured for rallyin.but i got this mi16 sitting here so why dont i just use that? im not that fussed on winning i just want the most fun!
no matter what il be strippin the rotten 1 so iv got a cars worth of spares but selling the engine to fund a few parts, guards first then hopefully a diff if a good sh 1 comes up,just need to work out which car to use!!
whichever 1 i end up doing il do a full build topic in the project section i cant wait to start i just need advice on which 1 to start with then i can get stuck in! ;)

No there isn't , but you may drive slower .

Just get the first thing that moves , find someone to point you in the right direction and enjoy it.

any 1 know what the mi will be like traction wise? its on the 1.9 box cos surely the pwers higher up similar to the 1600s, not like the low down 1900 grunt!

I might be talking c**p but didn't think you were allowed 16v cars in road rallying?

Haven't done any for a couple of years but seem to remember I could only use an Mi16 on 12cars rather than road rallies.

As has been said before there isn't a lot to do in order to get out there, have a go and see if you enjoy it. Do a few events, change a few components between and if after a while it's what you want to do, then get on and prep a car properly.

We've won events in the past in std road cars, as said it's all about the navigation.

Good luck but as Slippy say's you'll end up wanting to go staging and then it will take over your life and you're financially fu**ed!

The rules changed a couple of years ago James . typically just after I'd spent my money on getting the 8V to a reasonable road rally spec.

You're dead right about the stages though !!!

Why does tha not surprise me! No doubt some bright spark at the msa decided it was a sensible idea to change the rules - just like they did to us with the rally car after we got a turbo lump sorted, only for them to then ban non oe turbo cars doh!

yes you need a non race national b licence from the msa.
you can now fit any 16v engine from any car so long as it uses the original inlet manifold and plenum fitted to the engine as std.
The idea behind it was to allow more powerful but quieter engines. Which doesn't explain why they banned turbos, including diesels- go figure!
I'm in the middle of an Mi install in mine. 160hp std, you would struggle to get that from a 8v without carbs or TBs.
I'd go for a Mi16 CWP in a 1900 box. Forget the std 1900 box, it's no good. 1600 box is ok a cheap/ easy compronmise. Mine will have a 4.8 in it, when I've rebuilt it.
If I were you I'd put a decent box and guards on the Mi you have and use it. As long as it's not dangerously rusty then you've nothing to loose. At leats you know the car

Hello everyone.

Im looking at doing the same thing in the new year. Im picking up a 1.9 gti at the weekend. Getting sump and tank guards from Peter Lloyd and then im getting out there as soon as I can.

I used to do 12 car events up in the midlands but they seem a bit tame compared to welsh road rallying!

Have a look on the Teifi valley mc site. They're not far from you and they have a really good guide to road ralling.

Heres the link. http://www.teifivall.../rally_info.php

I don't know if im allowed to post links so mods feel free to remove it if not.

how do i go about getting the liscence and is that expensive?
iv got a 1600 box spare on my other 1 fitting that wont be a problem,iv found some second hand guards close by just tryin to convince my bird she should get me them for xmas!
the 1 i will be using will be my red rust free mi now instead of the black 1 i initially thought id use as it still has the 1.9 beam and the interior still intact.be fitting the cage into it on my time of. i need to raise the front up abit as its very low at the mo but there is not much work needed to get it road worthy and its better as its using the full mi 3 row management, just need to fix the thing thats stopping it running.i think its an imobiliser problem now but got some1 coming to sort it for me once he gets time.cant wait!!
