Pts Gravel Guard And Gti6 Sump

Well I offered the PTS gravel guard (well a copy made by West Midlands Motorsport) up to my Mi16 engined 205 which is fitted with the stiffener and Gti6 sump. Couldn't even get the front mounting bar on due to the casting on the front of the sump. So spent two hours with drill, grinder and die grinder surgically removing the 'extra' cats bits on the front. So the bar fits. But the guard will need lowering slightly at the front, I'm think 10mm probably, but the 'extra' casting under the flywheel won't allow the stiffener web on the guard to fit and the 'extra' bit on the back of the sump will need to come off before. So I guess it's sump off now it's in the car to do it, after I spent tim e fitting and sealing it when the motr was upside down in the stand.
there you going work, preparation and planning all in the wrong order!

I had a similar prob when fitting the first 16v into our rally car. (which had previously been fine with an 8v and pts guard)

We ended up getting the oxy acetylene out, marking the guard, clamping between 2 rsj's and then heating the guard up until it almost melted (yes the odd splodge of ally suggests it might of got too hot in some places!) before bashing the cr*p out of it with a very large hammer!

Managed to bend it where required and now it has about an inch clearance up to the sump. Still bolts up as per original.

Tip for fitting the rear - if you have access to a welder....

If you use a bit of thought, it's possible to get a couple of nuts up inside the main subframe, drill a couple of holes next to where they go and then tack the nuts in place with a welder.

It means that removing the rear now just requires undoing 3 bolts whilst lying on your back under the car (we use a cordless impact gun) rather than faffing around trying to get a spanner on the nuts.

Sumpguard comes off in under a minute which is handy in service - I know you road rally so not so vital but it's surprising how these things make life easier betweeen events when back in the workshop!

i don't think it's too far away, will have to wait until I cut all the neccesary off the sump to see how far out it is. Just wish I'd done it before I fitted the sump. My rear bolts go through the thin flange at the rear of the subframe and was thinking of welding nuts in but prefer nylocs for the security they offer.
Xmas has stopped play on the grounds of marriage relations so will restart on it in the new year!
