Would You Fit This Exhaust To Your Gti? (Hoffman)

Recommended Posts

roohunt

Hi everyone,

Just picked myself up my first 205 GTI - It's a 1.9 Sorrento green 1990 series 1.5

It needs a new exhaust and I found this new unit on ebay, can't seem to find any mention of this brand from the forum search but it looks like it will do the job, was wondering if any of the experts here had any opinions on if it's worth getting or if not a link to a better alternative would be much appreciated. Very keen to get it sorted asap so I can get out in the car.

Looks OK value, £100 delivered and 2 year guarantee, I would ask them if the downpipe has the split in it as per the OE system.

Thanks Tom, have just sent him an email asking about the split - If it doesn't are there any that you would recommend that do?

Got a reply and it does not have the split, would I be better off ordering direct from Peugeot? Scouting around I found part number

1704 95

Does this part have the correct down pipe split?

Think Bosal come with the split, and come highly recommended. Try your local exhaust stockist/factors.

Bosal definitely don't have the split, but they are at least generally the correct bore (for later 2 piece systems anyway) and fairly good quality.

All useful stuff - From my very uneducated perspective, what benefits does the split give? Does it effect the performance, general running, mpg etc?

Peugeot have quoted me £240 for the OE unit, just weighing up if the benefits are worth the additional cost over a £100-150 aftermarket but standard system without the split?

Would appreciate any owners thoughts on this.

If you have the funds go Pug O.E its a no brainer. Some of the aftermarket stuff i have bought has been poor, not all just a majority.

Bosal is OE... why pay pug premium, go to a decent larger motofactors, get Bosal, job done. Front section is perhaps 60-80, backbox 45.. ask nice and they usually knock ten percent off.

I've fitted bosal systems twice, in between flirtations with Maniflows... and both times they have fit very easily, and been totally reliable.

I've contacted them a while ago when looking for one & they didn't have the split then either, I think Walker are the only people that make a system with the split now but I'm going to go speak to a local stainless exhaust specialists about making a copy of the oe design in stainless with the siamesed downpipe if he can.

Bosal were never oe for the 205, it was ecia & Arvin had the factory spec for selling them aftermarket.

A mate used to work for Arvin before the merged with Bosal etc & then into Klarius / euroflo or whoever they are now & stopped making them in the correct design.

Arvin used to make oe exhausts for the 306 afaik (according to my mate when he worked there & had a 306) but nothing else.

The split in the down pipe matches the split in the exhaust manifold, effectively making the exhaust what is known as a 4-2-1. which effectively looks like this:

6.jpg

The standard 205 manifold has a split where it exits to the downpipe. (Struggling to find a pic but found one of a GTI-6 manifold which has 4 inputs, so imagine yours has just 2 and the dividing wall comes out further)

!Bf!r7K!BWk~$(KGrHqYH-CIErodRksGBBK+rhTo

Original downpipes carry this split on until it bends under the car where the two "D" shaped pipes effective join into one "O" shaped one

This shows the split in the downpipe

Non-split exhausts look like this

sportex-DP30.jpg

A 4-2-1 exhaust is meant to benefit the gas flow and increase performance. The manifold and exhaust design was one of the reasons the 205 GTI had such high performance figures for its engine and the standard design is hard to improve on, unlike other cars. Exhaust design is a tuned length, so changes in the system design will effect torque at certain revs but can release a higher overall power figure; so a race car will want high rev power, but a road car will want good low down and mid range torque.

I would not say I am an exhaust expert, but now you know as much as me. Having a search of the net will take you to more detailed explanations on back pressure and scavenge effects, and this will lead to ported and polished heads, valve seat angle, plenum chambers and inlet tract length! The world is your oyster!

Henry, fantastic post thank you very much. Informative and really helpful, with all that in mind i'll definitely be going for the peugeot unit.

Just a shame it seems nigh on impossible to find a decent aftermarket system with the split in it nowadays.

The only thing I've found with some aftermarket systems that have the split downpipe is that it doesn't run the full length of the downpipe to where it narrows underneath the car & only part way down the pipe to above the first kink / bend unlike the oe/Arvin & Walker systems.

I got quoted today £75 delivered for a Walker system.

I thought that was quite good.

Where was that from?

I'd be interested to know if Walker still have the split too, as I've always found them to be good quality in the past...

Just to confirm your exhaust is the complete unit from manifold back to the back box ??

It would have be ordered through me to get the discount, also its a special order part which would take a couple of days to get into stock.

Will double check this on Monday. Positive it has though.

I have also asked "Daviewonder" on this forum to price one up as he works for a motorfacter to.

No worries will move this over to the wanted section to arrange a price on Monday if it has the required split. (which is £75)

He also has the bolt fixing kits and gasket you will need to fit the exhaust to the manifold and is far cheaper than Pug.

In that case would definitely be keen to get hold of all the fixings and the gasket too whilst we're at it, may as well get everything required in one go.
