Ratios

i know a lot of people love to use lower ratio gearing for better acceleration. but seeing as though my 4bie is going to be super stripped would i be able to get away with using the 1.8 td final drive and select a variation of gears to stilll give me excitable acceleration. taking in mind ill be running 2.0 8 valve turbo with superchip say roughly 180/190 bhp. also what kind of weight reduction would i be getting close to, ideally i would like to get it down to 1000 kg so id be close to 100 bhp per ton mark so far ive done away with the rear seats parcel shelf and the metal it fixes too ill be using perspex for the rear and side windows i want to do away with electric windows. all the sound deadining is being stripped out. ( WHAT A PAIN IN THE ARSE THAT IS ) interior trim is going the handbrake console has bee removed ill be keeping the dash although im after a phase 2 version with all the fittings.

What did you use to remove the sound deadening? I've been using a heat gun at 630 degrees which works fine in the interior, but the wheel arch stuff sticks like sh!t to a blanket & hardly budges.

 i was using a plumbers blow torch. it managed to do the boot and p/s before it ran out of gas. somebody borrowed my heatgun and never brought it back and cant remember who it was. doe ;) i iant tackled the wheel arch stuff yet but have used a stanley to clean up the tops of the turrets and around the engine bay. if i had the spare cash id take it to be dipped prept and refurbed my mate had it done to his metro turbo it cost him just over a grand including the transport to get the vehicle to the destination. i might tackle the arches with my dads weed burner it looks like one of those blow torches that removes white lines from the roads. maybe overkill but worth a try

i guess im going to have to answer my own question here. after doing plenty of reading i came across a thread about t16 ratios and the f/d seems to be close to that of the 1.8 diesel. first gear is quite tall and seeing as though mine is a be box im going to get a wide option of ratios to choose from so as performance increases i can try other ratios and with me having a spare box i can build and swap as i please to see what works and what doesnt.

Seems a bit pointless to take weight away and then up the gear ratios which will negate the weight saving. But then again as we all know turbo engines have the torque to handle longer ratios.

as i decrise the weight the more the vehile is prone to wheelspin which i dont want so by lenghtening the ratios and decreasing weight i can keep some sort of balance between acceleration/topend speed and grip.

ive read plenty of posts about using the mi16 f/d and lesser. then using 4 other gears to keep a close setup and keeping 5th standard for motorway crusing, but this setup gives a big jump from 4th/5th so i want a nice equal setup through all the range from 1st/5th but with a decent top end speed

There is no point using a diesel cwp. You still need to have an overall low 1st ratio in order to get you moving, more especially so with a 4WD. There's no boost off idle. That's one of the reasons why the Mi16x4 has such a low 1st gear, 3.45:1 compared to 2.92:1 for an Mi16. I think you best solution is a box from an 8V 405, either 1.9L or 2L. They have the same 2-5th ratios as an Mi16, but with a lower 1st, 3.25:1 and a longer cwp, 4.06:1 from memory.

didnt realise the 4bie was so low ive just been going off the fwd ratios. ;) do you have the full list of the ratios for the 4bie gearbox.

dont forget im using the 406 sri turbo 8 valve engine and my rpm range is similar to a xud9. i believe mine to be 2500 to 5500 power band. so if i use the standard mi16 ratios or closer but using the final drive from diesel, wouldnt this suit better?
