Sounds Like A Knacked Wheel Bearing But It Isnt

Recommended Posts

When turning left I get a sound exactly like a rumbling wheel bearing, so I swapped the wheel bearing on the drivers side rear (as that was where the noise sounded like it was from). No change. Then I had some new front hubs to put on, with new bearing, which didnt change anything either so it wasnt this bearing instead..

Occasionally I will hear the odd knocking sound from the rear end as well as a rumble on left handers, so now Im thinking that a bush may have failed on the beam and road noise is being transmitted into the cabin on left corners.

Does this sound like a good starting point to check for the failed component, or is there another more likely culprit?

Cheers, Anton

a couple of suggestions -

exhaust!

some kind of mounting/bush. (suspension/engine/beam)

spare wheel.

and I'm guessing here, but seeing as most pugs have one, Intermediate driveshaft bearing?

..possibly an exhaust issue, but really doesnt sound like I would expect it to if it was.

..no spare wheel.

wouldnt imagine its a driveshaft bearing -but wouldnt know what characterisics this'd cause if it went. I do have solid engine mount bushes though which help to prevent movement in the area I'm thinking???

Are rear beam bushes prone to failing?

when my driveshaft went I thought it was the wheel bearing due to the squealing/grinding sound gettign worse on cornering. HAd a look underneath and the cv boot had split so there was no lubrication in the joint. If I wound down the window the noise was very obvious it was from the front of the car

Took my mechanic friend out in the 205 today, he thinks the noise is from the nearside front wheel bearing. This seems strange as the noise is happening when turning left (????), but I have a replacement so will fit it and see.

Any opinions on the noise which happens when turning left? -Apparently it is definitly a wheel bearing according to him..
