How Do I Go About Cobbeling Together A 1.9 Rear Beam

I'm totally fff ing fed up with this these rear beam and drum shaninigans I really got to do somthing about it.

 

A rear bearing failed on my car at 50mph yesterday, smoke, skiding and all. The heat and swarf have locked the hub nut to the axel stub...Big pisser...I doubt that it will come off without ruining the thread on the stub. And to be honest I dont really trust the metal now its metalurgy has changed so much it looks a very white grey. We will see but I rekkon it'll be off you come mr beam.

First off! A question about another 1.6 beam that I have.......

 

The drivers side was seized up. When the shocks and the torsion bar that runs through the middle of the beam were removed the drivers side seems to be as free as the passengers side, not seized at all. Does this mean that it was the torsion bar seizing?

 

There is no camber on either side btw.

 

I'm kind of hoping that I can grease it all up and put it back together. Probaly wrong tho. If so, and it has to be taken apart further....

...I'm well fed up with drums and If I'm going to have to totally rebuild this beam ASAP then what can I do about getting disks on there? Presuming the main beam itself is a okay what cars in the scrappy can I rob for the other bits from...ie disks & calipers from 306 etc.

 

 

Really would prefere to do this because I dont think I can trust drum bearings anymore. I actually have, dont ask me why, a brand new rear bearing and that looks well meaty and safer than a poxy taper bearing.

I'm having a hard time even deciding what the hell is best to do and Searching for answers is just pissing me off, sorry, right now I need to start a debate.

you never know how shagged your beam is until you have it in pieces on the floor. Mine was not that bad until i took it apart.

 

Not sure on pinching 306 rear disks and calipers etc, but i do know that 306 shafts fit in 205 beams, so possibly you can use the whole training arm in a 205 beam tube? This will come with brakes and the lot!

Well you'll need your donor beam (1.9/1.6)

 

Need a decent 205 base model beam tube. Suggest you strip them at the scrappy, and a pair of shafts, either of the base model or off likes of a derv 306.

 

make sure the base model beam does have an anti roll bar (not a early 205) and you'll be ok.

 

With a couple of hours scrounging you'll save ALOT of money :unsure:

Thats what worries me...Having thought about it I think the best thing to do is to dismantle both beams and see what there is to work with.

 

so possibly you can use the whole 306 training arm in a 205 beam tube? This will come with brakes and the lot!

 

Can anybody confirm either way 100% ? Is there any PSA car that can be robbed for complete trailing arms to fit a 205 beam?

The beam tube will hopefully be one of the two 1.6 beams that I have. Trouble is, if it is to be a total rebuild then I'm just not going to settle for 1.6 Trailing arms, hubs brakes etc. I should have added 'out off a 1.6 beam' to the end of the title.

1. right, firstly the hub locking problem has nothing to do with the rear beams functioning in any way.

so just replace the bearing, and the stub axle that is runs on if it gets damaged (use a realllly big breaker bar on the nut, and a scaffold pole if that doesnt work)

 

2. this isnt a torsion bar (in its function) its the Anti Roll Bar, ARB for short.

It will prevent one side of the beam from moving a certain amount if its still connected to the other side, especially if you havent taken a damper off. The only thing the ARB is connected to is the other trailing arm, so if one arm is free to move and the other isnt it will hinder its movement to a certain degree.

 

When you took the damper and ARB off did you inspect the bearings of the trailing arm?

 

3. Discs and calipers off a 306 are identical to 205 and 209 units, as are saxo, 106, ZX. Xsara, even the 206.

The trouble is that its not this simple, you will need a disc specific stub axle, Hub and bearing, bracket that bolts to the trailing arm for the Caliper carrier, handbrake cables, brake lines, brake pads.

So its easier and cheaper to get a complete Disc braked beam.

 

As for wether the complete 306 trailing arm will fit I know it will, but I dont know what else needs to be done to make it fit, the trailing arm axle itself is the same as for the 205/309.

I'm also unsure about the bearing and hub, as well as the bracket for the caliper carrier, I'll check my Parts CD to see if anything comes up.

Just checked, the caliper bracket from a 306 trailing arm has the same part number as a 205/309 unit.

 

couldnt find the stub axles though, and I cant confirm if the hubs would fit, but I think they will as they use the same bearings as 205/206/306/309.

 

just a case of getting out there with a tape measure and vernier calipers.

The hub nut has had a stupidly large bar on it, an it will'ne budge...To much swarf and possibly welded together due to the extream heat...? Like I mentioned before the hub nut and axel stub has well changed colour to a nearly white grey! Would it be trust worthey even if I could get the hub nut off?

Nope, when I took it off I was just starting to dismatle it without any urgency, When I look what should I be looking for?

get a garage to what a rattle gun on it, then when you get it off just take your frustration out on it with a large hammer (i.e remove the old stub and stick a new one in)

 

before you go straight off and get some 306 trailing arms it'd be an idea to find what else needs doing before fitting them, i.e what length are they? do they alter the track at all?

 

the origional ARB should fit I reckon

 

I'm guessing that the torsion bars might fit?

technically you were right anyway as the anti roll bar IS still a torsion bar <_<

 

its just referred to as the ARB to differentiate it from the two 'main' torsion bars.

Gotcha. This could be the quickest solution. If I dont have to worry about fff ing up the axel stub shaft seen as it will be replaced... In that case the hub nut will come off by hook or by crook.
