I guess it's about time I show my face on here on here, and start a thread about one of my numerous on-going projects. Especially as i've had this one nearly 2 years now.

So nearly 2 years ago I acquired this:

A 1987 205 GTi 1.9. Hasn't seen the road in a number of years, came with some evidence of just how long it's been off the road....

The previous owner had made a start on stripping it down to bring it back to it's former glory but due to other issues realized he was just never going to have the time to complete it and therefore passed it on. I would like to bring it back to life, currently a complete none runner, although the engine will turn over freely on the starter. And bring it back to factory original, but I am struggling to work out just what this one would have been. I seem to have a mix and match of phase 1 & phase 1.5 parts. The front seats are a different trim to the rear bench fitted. So it's going to take some digging around and help from you lovely people on here to work this one out I think.

I'll try and keep this updated as much as I can but progress will be slow around my other projects as well.

Holy s*it, look at the size of that cannon! Someone should be shot (with an actual cannon) for that monstrosity!

Dvla tell us it's a nice early phase1 1.9 registered in march 87. So should be Phase1 all the way with the rear seats being the correct ones. Very desirable GTi and I'll watch this with interest

Yep, mine's April '87 and Phase 1, so either someone's done some retro fitting, or..?? Looks like the side-repeaters are later too.

Looking forward to what you find out as you dig in.

OP wants factory original which, if the plate matches the car would be ph1. The small view of be interior shows at least 3 different colour plastics so seems to be a "bitsa" retro fit. The rear exhaust shows that originality hasn't been a priority in the past and the engine bay seems to have a k&n fitting and looks like a screw on, later type distributer cap. Where the vin should be stamped into the scuttle and unpainted seems to be solid colour. On reflection I think a thorough check of this cars identity may be a good idea. Was quite usual a few years ago to fit later phase parts to gtis.

Here's a slightly (only just) better shot of the engine bay.

It's got a phase 1.5 dash and wheel fitted, came with a Grey carpet. Two wheels are SMR and two are Speedline, and the spare I think is a 1.6 item, it's certainly not a matching set. It's been played about with the intention of restoring by the previous two owners. And I didn't get any paperwork with the car either, so I really haven't a clue what's gone on with it's past.

What's the best way of digging into this one's identity?

I do want to get it running though, but need to get a new set of spark plugs and work out why it's lost it's spark after fitting a new set of HT leads. Think i'll have to go over it with a fine toothcombe and clean up all the electrical connections and see what lurks inside the dizzy.

checking the vin number will help.

Where can I check the Vin? Just run out to grab it and it's not being recognized on servicebox.

Also if it helps or confuses things even more it has a BE3 box with reverse opposite 5th.

And some more pictures of the interior etc...

Is that a silver inner sill and floor? Ph2 distributer and inlet with ph1 /1.5 coil mounted on the wing. So it's quite likely got a dubious king lead connection on the coil end.

Does it have the tachymetric relay by the ECU under the dash (it should be in a black box on the chassis leg under the washer bottle)

Can you tell if the door mirrors are correct for the doors? As fitting later mirrors to ph1 doors is not a straight swap..

Can't tell from the pics but what rear brakes does it have, drum or disk?

I would check that the VIN number on the scuttle matches the VIN number on the plate in your photo and the VIN number on the V5 before you spend any time and money on that.

Also given its age and the last time it was on the road I would check it isn't a cut and shut, there was one on here only a few years ago - http://forum.205gtidrivers.com/index.php?showtopic=158845

Can't seem to find a vin on the scuttle pannel. Think it's going to be get the v5 and the v888 form sent off see what comes back and what matches what. I'm thinking possible 1.9 re-shell at some point. It does have a disc rear axle.

Just a small update, the reg number and the vin number match...

So it looks like someone's gone to the effort of dropping a 1.9 lump in (if it is a 1.9) and actually sent the logbook back off to DVLA to update it... I'm going to hazard a guess someone at some point got hold of a crash damaged phase 1.5/2 1.9 and did the swap into my shell.

I'll have to send of the V888 (or whichever one it is) form and see if there's a record of the engine being changed at some point.
