[car_overhaul] Topaz 205 1.9 Gti Tidy Up

Some of you all ready no the car but I thought seeing it is a rare color and cybernck suggesting I should show you guys what I am doing to it.

The plan at the moment is to put another 8 valve engine in it untill I have got one of my gti6 engines ready. I have done a compression test on the engine that is in it and one of the pistons has gone so out with the old and in with the new. I am all so going to do a underside/running gear restore just like I did with my silver 205 but this will be done when my new garage is up to home my silver 205 and move the topaz into my workshop for some work over the winter.

I have had 205's for about 10 years now and I wanted one to drive the right way again and do some tracks days, hill climb, autocross and any other thing that takes my fancy as some of you no my silver 205 is pretty much a musuem peace now and that is why I started the search for a cheap 205 and that's how I came across the topaz and me liking my rare colors now it had buy me all over it, now I am trying to stop my self from doing it but I have got a eye for detail and I will put the same effort into the topaz 205 like I done with my silver 205 which in a way is a waste but a clean, well built 205 turns heads theses days and that's why I enjoy what I do with my 205's and I get people asking me if I would do some thing with there 205's like I do with mine but I wont go down that route as I like my one offs.

Enjoy

I have started to strip the engine bay down to see what can be kept and what needs replacing. I am working late next week and with all the good weather that means I wont be busy at work so I will be taking the engine wiring loom with me and sitting down in the workshop and tidying and replacing any worn bits on the loom to make it look pretty again. I have taking some of my hoses into work today and put them in the parts washer tank to get all the crap off and to see if there is any splits or holes. I am lucky that I have kept all the parts that I have taken off my silver 205 that I had painted but now with going down the original route I took them off and replaced them with the right colored parts. I will take some pictures tomorrow to show every one what I have been doing.

Did it have big end rattle and smoked like a trouper?? The car has been painted all over as there is over spray in places. The car has had nearly 20 owners and sorn a lot in the last few years. Any info would be great

New painted parts and gear box is ready for the parts cleaner. The parts were painted in one coat of etch primer and 2k silver on top but in a way I wish I gave it 2 coats of zinc and 2 or 3 coats of high build primer to have the parts even more smother but I have to remind my self this is a cheap 205 and not my silver one :P

I had it for about 4 months in 2009 - if i remember rightly I actually fitted some half leathers to it because it came like it is now! so someone after me has obviously swapped them!

The engine was a stormer - 1900 unit as i recall and really torquey..

The tailgate laquer was the only thing that let it down really as it had gone big time - it was a topaz tailgate on the inside though so again must have been swapped & painted

Thank you for the info, just trying to build up a picture of the cars history,

I have got two sets of late half leather kicking about so I mite put the rears in and a pair of cobra buckets seats in the front and I mite end up with a cage in there but all the interior will be staying.

I dove the car and it didn't go bad seeing as I have rubbish compression in one bore buts its got a good oil pressure and handles well but I will replace all the running gear to get the proper feel back.

I took the black inside panel off the tailgate and saw the blue which is strange really as any one else would only change the tailgate if it had be rear ended.

I no some people will not be happy with the plans I have got for it as it is a rare color but to me unless you were going to do a bare shell rebuild on it the car is to well gone now with rot on the inner wings and rear bumper mounts and drain away area are rotten but I have done this before on 205's so the rot will be tidied up.

Nice work! How does the GTI-6 manifold fit in the grand scheme of things though? :)

The car will be having a GTI-6 engine fitted later on and as I had paint in the gun I thought it would be rude not to paint some more bits and bobs :D
