The Clutch Cable 'pops Out' When Clutch Is Lifted And Barely M

Recommended Posts

Here is what happens when you firstly press the clutch in then pull it up (the clutch pedal is really far back, against the floor nearly)

Here is a gif of it in action:

What to do? Clutch has gone? New cable? For reference the clutch has been a bag of s*ite for a while and started juddering in first and the head got proper hard to engage, reverse being impassible while the engine was running. New clutch time?

Cheers

Maybe it's just the plastic section that fits into the mount on the gearbox getting worn, so if it's that, maybe just a new cable rather than clutch. However, the juddering indicates both worn cable and/or clutch going.

But if you're having problems selecting gears that could point to a worn clutch. Is the biting point very high, any signs of the clutch slipping?

Cheapest option might be get a new cable and see if that fixes things. A while back I also had judder, got around to putting a new clutch and cable on and when I had a good look at the 'old' clutch it was in great shape.

I'd guess either release bearing has collapsed or has worn through the diaphragm spring fingers, or both. I'd say you need the box off to see what's what.

Well before it properly went the biting point was proper low. So much so that when I had the clutch fully pressed down the car would start moving when in first as if you're letting the clutch up.

Might just got a new cable myself and if that doesn't work I'll get the clutch changed

Right fair does. was considering getting the gearbox rebuilt anyway

If the clutch biting point is that far down, it is time to get a new one. When I removed mine after being really low to the floor for ages and going through a cable every year, the release bearing had worn a large groove into the diaphram fingers as Tom has mentioned.

It could be the old favourite problem of the engine to gearbox bolts working loose allowing them to seperate , could be a nice easy solution to your problem - just tighten up the 4 bolts then readjust the clutch .

I'd try a cable before you pull the box just to rule it out. They are a cheap part and easy enough to fit.

I would look elsewhere, they list that one cable as fitting cars from 1986-1998 which is completely made up and you probably can't rely on the photo either. Also the one review on that page just says:

Can I return this cable?

Hello, The cable supplied is not correct to fit my car and due to the lack of time I have be unable to make contact with you below (sorry), the cable I require is as per the attached photo i.e. with a square retaining clip (one which arrived has a round retaining clip. Is it possible to return this cable for one as per the attached photo? Rgds. Adrian

Your best bet is to look your car up on servicebox via its VIN number to get a part number and/or find a good local motor factor.

just managed to look at the gif, the arm doesn't look like its moving very far at all and the nuts are wound right up on the threads, to me that suggests a totally fubar clutch, cable popping off is just a coincidence.

I believe there are 3 types of MA cable, early type, bayonet fitting into the pedal box, and a clevis pin with metal end fitting, later type has a round hole but still a clevis pin and metal fitting on the pedal.

post 1990 its a conventional round hole and a plastic end fitting with a hook type pedal.

however looking again, that's a GTI and this is posted in the TU section, similar applies to the BE cables.
