Depends if it needs serial or "null" serial. In which case pins 2-3 are reversed. It only needs three wires. If using a desktop, can't you just fit a serial card into a spare slot?

As I suspected, it's probably null, as it's computer to computer.

Welshpug, is the 13pin lead not the DTA one, if not then you do indeed need to switch 2 and 3 around.

its 15 pin, I'm not using the lead pictured on the first page, see the pic a few posts up, wired as per this diagram

The DTA comms cable is an odd one and is not a standard off the shelf cable - for starters it's a 9 pin D-sub one end and a 15 pin D-sub the other.

 

The wiring - which I have made and successfully tested myself - as I said above is:

 

Pin 1 --> Pin 1

Pin 2 --> Pin 2

Pin 3 --> Pin 3

Pin 4 --> Pin 4

Pin 5 --> Pin 5

 

Don't start swapping pins around on the cable if that is how you've wired it.

Sorry 13 was a miss type. I would definately check the ecu communication with a working cable and computer next then.

Hi WP,

The data TX and RX lines are on pins 2 and 3 which you have wired straight through, usually the convention is to wire as per a "null modem" which is wired sender TX to receiver RX and vice versa.

may be that's it.

Have you got the data on what pins do what on the 15 way (i.e tx, rx, gnd etc) and then we can make sure the pins are where they need to be on the 9way. As said you need the tx of your 9way to go to the rx of your usb converter and the rx of your 9way to go to the tx of your usb converter but the to be honest your rs232 to usb converter should handle this and therefore you shouldn't need to change the pins.

 

Once we get the signals of the 15way we should be able to know better.

It looks to me as the RD and the TX are the wrong way round. My previous post was a bit confusing. Your 9way I would think need to of a Female configuration with TX on pin 2 and RD on pin 3. This will mate to the correct way round with your male on your usb adapter which is more of a straight through that then converts to usb.

You can test by just swapping the TX and RD on your female 9way. I dont think it will cause any problems - I dont want to be held responsible though However to put you mind at easy I swap these all the time at work whilst trying to solve issues and have never had an issue.

 

Now saying that I could be totally wrong as like Anthony says he has got his working fine the way you have it?

Update, tried dan's laptop with a mef lead and usb adapter (same as the one i have)

 

Still no luck, getting 8020 errors.

Had a similar issue before but not with the same management. Rebooting the pc with everything connected and turned on allowed it to connect. Also had issues with Baud rates being incorrect as well giving similar issues.

Win98 boot disk is probably easier (if you can work in DOS). Format the HD, add CD support and you're done.

Right, not great with computers so have so far failed to get XP installed on the old PC's.

Heard about WIN 7 compatability mode previously, found it, tried it, no different.

8020 Error with ECU off and cannot attempt to connect any further times with ECU powered up when opening DTASWIN, or COM port already in use if powered up after opening software.

Rapidly becoming disheartened with the lack of forward compatability when other ecu systems seem to manage it, granted my unit is a few year old but has never been used so far and is still a current model.
