sounds too old for a cat mate, cos the Cats came in ~j/k reg.

so you should be ok.

another check is counting the boxes on your exhaust: one in tyhe middle, one at the back is a non-cat model.

hth,

Jon.

Lemme guess, some arrogant but vacant twat who knows sweet F.A about these cars was trying to pretend he's an authority on them and tell you your car must have a cat? :D

Too old for a CAT but the give away is the lamda sensor in the exhaust pipe, near the engine if it has a CAT.

Engine code might tell. XU9JAZ and XU9J1 engines have CAT. Codes are DKZ and DFZ, I think.

Read the above and decide for yourself! If it does have a CAT then avoid leaded or LRP.

How Do I Know If I Have A Cat

you start finding dead birds on your door step and foot prints on your car

but serioulsy i think your car is to old for a cat as it was only fitted on the phase 2 models, but more on the k plate onwards as i had a j plate and that didnt have a cat

Mine's an E-reg (87-88) and it doesn't.

Cats became compulsory about 1992 IIRC.

biggest giveaway....... check for a lambda sensor in the frontpipe. or for the people who dont like getting on there hands an knees, look at the front cover of the ECU. if its got MOTRONIC written on it you've got a kat

hope this helps

So there shouldn't be any cat'd J-plates.

Unless they had the optional cat fitted from new (cat was an option from about 1990 I think)

Ive got a 1992 J plate and i dont have a cat, although mines an early J. They started cat wacking n to the later J's so 1993 sounds about right. Not that Ive ever seen a K reg GTi or many other J's also. What year did they stop making the GTi's? Was it because of the cat? if so im gonna make a documentry about it called 'Tiddles Revenge - The Cat That Killed The Car'.

Cat or not... is cat not good enough? Is there any difference in performace or bhp? The reason I´m asking you ... I´m buying a ´94 GTi and think it´s CAT. Is that something I should be worried about?

No nothing to be worried about, its just a little down on power. From what I have heard about the CAT model GTi's, is that they are a lot easier or smoother to drive around town (not wanting to judder/kangaroo at low speeds) - I personally like the twitchy on/off feel of the noncat gti and wouldnt want it smoothed out (or 8bhp lower power output)

Remember this is all on paper & as new spec, and a good cat gti should be quicker/more power than a f**ked non cat obviously :)

Oh - 1994 is very rare for GTi's - hardly any produced and will definately be cat - a good upgrade route for these cars are the 406/XM turbo engine as mi16 is out of the question.
