Puddles In The Car

Ok i have a leak somewhere on the drivers side of the car and every day i find water under the carpet by the rear passenger and a liitle bit in the carpet in the drivers footwell (it rains everyday here!).

 

is it ok to use a hairdryer to dry out the carpet directly above the fuel tank? (ie its not going to heat up the petrol dangerously?)

That won't be a problem. Think about how hot the exhaust gets and how close it is to the tank!

Mine does too, in fact I think most do!

 

A search will bring up loads of info, basically check door/window seals, sunroof, heater matrix. Best to sort as soon as possible, sound deadening will probably be sodden and holding water agasinst the floor, it'll come out like old soggy conflakes so don't expect to reuse it!

Waste of time using a hair dryer, it'll probably just burn out! (the hair dryer I mean)

Rear window seals are the likely candidate if the water is pooling in the rear footwells, and check that your sills aren't full of water because the drain points are blocked.

 

If there's pools of water, remove all the water you can with a cup or something, and then get an absorbant cloth to remove as much as you can. A fan heater left in the car with the windows ajar for a few hours will probably dry the rest out, but clearly its pointless until you fix the underlying cause. If you've got the time, the better way is to remove the seats, and then remove the carpet and sound deadening from the car to dry it out properly (you'll be amazed how much water the sound deadening will hold!)

 

It's certainly not normal for there to be puddles in the car when it rains, and if you leave the carpet and sound-deadening soaking wet for too long you'll eventually get rust - not only that, but generally it stinks and makes the car mist up really badly.

Cheers for the advice-i am driving back home tommorow so will try and get it dried out afterwoods. The water is in the drivers floor and the rear passenger floor on that side, the other side seems to be ok.

 

I guess there must be a faulty seel somewhere along that side.

Mine's had the same problem. Basically it was trickling in along the lower seal of the rear window. Same method - unbolt the seats, lift the carpets and dry out. First of all I've got to fit the new window seals, recently bought from my dealer for a lot less than the £39 list price!

If you haven't got the time but plenty of old towels, laying those on the wet area & treading on them heavily will soak up say 90% of it, but you really need to find out where it's coming in. Might be able to spot tell tale marks, if not hose or some sort of water spray done by someone else while you sit in the car & watch should reveal all.

Alternatively, get a cabriolet, mine never leaks. Only thing it does do well is stay dry, in fact. Two things it's good at ... 1/staying dry , 2/ standing still.

When my heater matrix went I actually poured litres of water and detergent in the footwells to help clean it up, and then used a battery powered wet and dry hand vacuum to suck it up. Worked OK, followed by kitchen towel and newspaper and leave it to dry. Course, it's a lot easier if the water is on top of the carpet as it has a water proof backing to stop the water getting through, but once it finds it's way under the carpet and soaks in to the sound deadening then that is a different story

Hello again.

 

Right, sealed the window friday night. Saturday morning there appeared to be little to no water in the rear foot well-job done i thought. Drove home for 2 hours yesterday with the windows open to dry it out.

 

Checked this morning to find a puddle and i know it didnt rain last night so im assuming its the heater matrix as i tried to get the heaters working on the motorway yesterday.

 

Whats the deal with the heater matrix? I didnt realise that the matrx ran to the rear of the car?! As the water is only in the rear on one side?!

 

Is it hard to replace?!

It's not, it's in the front under the dash. Not too hard to replace, do a search theres plenty on the subject.

 

If theres no water in the front then it's unlikely to be the matrix. You may have to do some stripping to find this leak, i.e. the rear seats and doorcards, sometimes you can be convinced a leak is coming from one source and it turns uout it coming from soemwhere completely diffferent and running some strange route undetected.

Well removed the rear seats, all is well under and around them. it would appear it is just the one footwell that is damp.

 

Im guessing the rain got in, i then sealed the window and the water just kept acumulating in the footwell.

 

Hopefully this will eventually dry out soon however if i find another puddle i will be a bit perplexed .
