Gearbox Oil Is Creamy

Recommended Posts

Guest powerslider

hi guys, just changed the oil on my 205 gti 's gearbox and it was a cream colour and smelt very sweet. Its as though its mixed with water, any ideas would be great.

The car is a 1.6 gti f reg.

Been told to replace with a good engine oil!!!!! is this true?

One last thing, reverse is next to 1st gear, is this a be1 or a be3 gearbox. Getting very confused.

Regards

Paul

sweet smell is normal, possibly a bit of water contamination has occured, dont worry if your changing anyway. You can use 50% engine oil if you want but Ive always found using the correct gearbox oil that pug supplies or the total BV transmission fluid works best.

BE1.

I would use proper gear oil if I were you, these gearboxes are pretty picky over the grade so I can't see engine oil working with the synchros at all.

Yes, the right stuff makes a hell of a difference. Miles, what is "BV" oil precisely?

The grade you need is 75W/80 and is available from most motor factors. Comma say theirs is specialy formulated for "Certain Peugeot and Rover gearboxes that need this grade"

Whatever you do, don't put normal EP90 gear oil in the box. Apart from wrecking the synchros you'll never get it out of first gear on a cold morning :o

BV is the Total gear oil specifically for Peugeot/Citroens that you can get from dealers and GSF etc.
