8v+6 Speed Box Gentry

Recommended Posts

;) After much reading of posts regarding wishbones and driveshafts I'm more confused than ever.

My Gentry had an auto box and rear drums is this normal ? I wish to stuff a six speed box in (which I have and the driveshafts fit ) - but I havn't yet sourced a motor. What can I use and will the clutch ass from my 205 1.8 turbo diesel fit anything?

I'm on the verge of buying something but it has to be right, can anyone help with advice :D ?

Wouldn't want to buy it all and then find out that nowt fits :o

Car is for road and track days and will be stripped out, I've also had confusing advice on having PAS or not and also a servo which I would personally ditch, so , is it PAS and Servo or none of these or does it depend on how light I can get the car.? :P

personally and depending on its condition of course i'd clean up the Gentry and sell it, then buy an already converted car.

seeing as the Gentry is rather rare it should get a fair asking price if you're willing to hold out for more than a week or two like most sellers :D

the 6 box will fit, but does have some slight issues with less r/h lock.

as for the clutch wait and see what engine you source.

PAS? see how you get on with it, you can always remove the ram and have an instant quickrack (PAS racks have less turns lock to lock than the manual racks)

Servo? I'd leave well alone unless you have big quads ;)

its an xu shell - you can rip out the gearbox and engine and fit something completely different like a complete gti-6 setup.

Your car has drums at the rear, automatic driveshafts, 1.6gti hubs and 1.9gti disks and brakes.

When I sorted mine I fitted 1.9 shafts and hubs so its completely running on 1.9 gti stuff. I will be fitting a tuned 1.9 gti engine and gearbox shortly too.

I dont think they ahd a 1.6 hub and 1.9 brakes. A 1.9 disk and calliper wont fit a 1.6 hub cos gti6 and 307 dont fit the 1.6. Think it may be 1.6 disk and 1.9 calliper. I would buy a 1.9 gti and use that as a base cos remember you will have to fit a manula pedal box, gear lever and linkage setup, sort out fuel pump system and get new shafts. You will also want stronger 1.9 hubs and rear disks so it seem like a 1.9 is the best place to start in my opinion

You also only have 105bhp instead of the 122bhp / 130bhp from most other GTI's (cat / non cat). You engine is an XU9J1/AZ and has smaller valves, less lift and longer duration cam and a compression ratio of 8.4:1.

A 6 speed box won't unleash any extra horses and will severely limit your steering lock then turning right.

Prime for whacking a turbo on though!!

Thanks for all the advice which has helped.

I bought the Gentry without an engine and sold off the auto box so I have a rolling shell which was mint untill I stoved in the drivers door with a fork lift truck  . Not to worry though, I have a spare door which is in good order to replace it.

After buying the 6 speed box I tried the drive shafts and they fit in the box, they also fit the hubs as that is where they came from so I may be in luck if I can find a motor to fit the box.

I dont mind an 8v as I had one before and it was producing 170bhp at the flywheel with twin webers, some headwork and a balanced bottom end so ideal to have some fun at Oulton or the new Anglesey circuit next year.

The problem is whether to keep the old diesel put a petrol in (have to buy an ecu) or turn the gentry into a track car and scrap the diesel. Too many choices :D

be different and track a derv  I saw an entertaining 205 DTurbo at a recent PSOOC rolling road, 5 doors, front mounted intercooler and an uprated turbo, 158 BHP IIRC.

it pulls away from GTi6's :D

I've recently sorted a 1500 Corsa diesel turbo which will keep with a Lotus Elise from 60ish to 100.

Don't know how long the conrods will last though :D
