Gti6 Plumbing With No Heater Matrix

Recommended Posts

allanallen

Evening all, I'm just trying to sus out the coolant system on my 309. It has a gti6 engine, 309 rad with the cap(like tu engined 205s have), newer style black expansion tank and no heater matrix.

right will this work ok?

rear water distribution block -to- bottom of rad

front of thermostat housing -to- top of rad

expansion tank bottom hose -to- rear water dist block

small pipe on top of expansion tank -to- top of rad

the link pipe between the rear dist block and t-stat housing removed

rear outlets on thermostat blocked up

other outlet on expansion tank blocked

I cant see any reason why this won't work but I'd greatly appreciate your input fellas. cheers allan

Trying to get my head around that ^ but does this give an alternative route to bypass the thermostat if needed?

Its basically just one circuit through the engine and rad with an expansion tank Tee'd into it. Why would you need to by-pass the thermostat?

That will work no problem Allan, This is how I have it on the drag car. The only differance is I have the small bore pipe from the stat housing (i don't mean the one from the radiator) going into the top right of the expansion tank.

I'm not sure why you want to bypass the themostat dave, the heater matrix circuit does because you dont want to have to wait till the thermostat opens before you can use the heater.

someone who knows more will correct me, but I understand that one circuit goes to the thermostat through the engine, and one bypasses the thermostat via the metal pipe at the back.

This maybe to help the waterpump as water wont move otherwise till the stats open ?

I could be talking complete sh*t but thats how I understand it

cheers chaps, I thought about that extra pipe as thats how my Mi is plumbed. I'm begining to wonder now if, as Dave says the coolant does need a bit of a circuit to get around the block untill the t-stat opens?

In my proposed set-up the coolant would surely just sit in the block until the t-stat opened and the coolant in the block may get really hot before the water in the t-stat housing got hot enough to open the stat??

does this make sense? am I babbling s*it

You want to have a 19mm bore or so pipe coming off the thermostat housing on the "closed" side of the thermostat, down to the rear distribution block. That way when you start from cold the water pump can push water across the block, out of the stat housing and back down this pipe to the water pump. Thus the water is circulating as it warms up. Then when hot the stat opens and the water goes off through the radiator. In fact some of the Mi16 stats shut off the bypass when this happens, so see what the thermostat in the housing you have looks like.
