Quick Be4 Gearbox Ratio Question

Recommended Posts

Saveit

Hi,

Ive done the BE4 conversion on my 106 racecar. But with 16" wheels the gearing is too high. Im looking to see if there are any other non-aftermarket final drives available that will fit the gearbox. The gearbox is from a 2003 Berlingo 1.6 TU5. Cant seem to find out what final drive is in it already.

Stefan

PM Welshpug, he has all that kind of information stored in his encyclopedic head

He might even tell you how many sugars the gearbox designer had in his tea!! :D

What is the id number on the gearbox? (For Example 20DL67) - You'll find it stamped on the front face of the box on the BE4.

iirc for the Berlingo box the final drive will be either 3.94, 3.79, 4.05 or 4.52. The id number will confirm which it is.

what Dan said, and Ross :)

find the i.d numbers, which IIRC will be etched/stamped into the front of the main centre casing on the front, next to where the clutch fork is if its on the front.

You could fit a 4.5 final drive to the box out of a berlingo 1.8 deisel(DW8). I have one of these built into a BE3 box but I had to get 3rd,4th and 5th out of a BE4 box.It should be easy when you already have a BE4.

just DM46 no other lettering?

looking on servicebox and there is a DM46MR as well as DM46, DM46 is a BE4J, DM46MR is a BE4R "Motor reinforce", both are 19x77 Final Drive.

BE4J was from November 1st 2005.

still not 100% concrete as to which set of ratios are in there though, ideally a VIN or a stripdown of the box.

ratio's from BE4R;

2311 P6 PRIMARY SHAFT 11/12/23 DTS - GEARBOX BE4R UNTIL GEAR BOX 7494722

2311 V3 11/12/15 DTS - GEARBOX BE4R SINCE GEAR BOX 7494723

2331 11 DRIVE GEAR 3EME 25 DTS (25X32) - TU5JP4 INJECTION AND GEARBOX BE4R AND REAR AXLE HYPOID GEARSET 17 X 77 AND GEARBOX BE4 N UNTIL GEAR BOX 7443107

2331 16 3 EME 31 DTS (31X40) - TU5JP4 INJECTION AND GEARBOX BE4R AND REAR AXLE HYPOID GEARSET 17 X 77 AND GEARBOX BE4 N SINCE GEAR BOX 7443108

2332 11 DRIVE GEAR 4EME 41 DTS (41X39) - TU5JP4 INJECTION AND GEARBOX BE4R AND REAR AXLE HYPOID GEARSET 17 X 77 AND GEARBOX BE4 N

2333 42 DRIVE GEAR 5EME 47DTS (47X35) - TU5JP4 INJECTION AND GEARBOX BE4R AND REAR AXLE HYPOID GEARSET 17 X 77 AND GEARBOX BE4 N

2333 44 5EME 44DTS (44X35) - TU5JP4 INJECTION AND GEARBOX BE4R AND REAR AXLE HYPOID GEARSET 19 X 77 AND BE4 J MANUAL GEARBOX

2316 P6 SHAFT 19 DTS ( 19X77) - TU5JP4 INJECTION AND GEARBOX BE4R AND BE4 J MANUAL GEARBOX AND REAR AXLE HYPOID GEARSET 19 X 77

2334 28 DRIVEN PINION 1ERE 38DTS (11X38) - TU5JP4 INJECTION AND GEARBOX BE4R AND BE4 J MANUAL GEARBOX AND REAR AXLE HYPOID GEARSET 19 X 77

2335 51 DRIVEN PINION 2EME 43 DTS (23X43) - TU5JP4 INJECTION AND GEARBOX BE4R AND BE4 J MANUAL GEARBOX AND REAR AXLE HYPOID GEARSET 19 X 77 UNTIL GEAR BOX 7494722

2335 78 2 EME 28 DTS (15X28) - TU5JP4 INJECTION AND GEARBOX BE4R AND BE4 J MANUAL GEARBOX AND REAR AXLE HYPOID GEARSET 19 X 77 SINCE GEAR BOX 7494723

Could you explain what all these numbers mean?

From what i can tell the final drives in both boxes mentioned are 19x77 meaning 4.05. Right? Then from which box can i find a lower gearing like 4.5 or ideally 4.9?

so

F/D - 19x77 4.05

1st - 11x38 3.45

2nd - 23x45 or 15x28 1.95 or 1.86

3rd - 25X32 or 31X40 1.28 or 1.29

4th - 41X39 0.975.

5th - 44X35

some M49 berlingo's, i.e MK1 have XU7, XUD7 and XUD9, and DW8 were on 17x77 which is 4.52, or 15x74 which is 4.93.

later mk2 berlingo's all have much longer gearboxes.
