Gti 6 Cam Cover Gasket/sealent?

Morning all,

 

I've tried using RTV sealent and cant get my cam covers on my gti-6 to seal.

 

What do you guys use?

 

Could I buy a sheet FPM gasket?

I Have managed to get the old seal off the old cam cover, so I will try and re-use it before I go and buy a sheet of fpm.

i just used halfords gasket sealent. just made sure i had a nice bead of it all the way round and that did the job. you might find you have difficulties using the old seal as it has already been pressed and flatened in certain places.

RTV, may work now that you've removed the old gasket? if trying to re-use the old gasket then ensure you put a thin smear of 'blue' on either side

The new cam cover came without a gasket, I used "just" RTV first time round.

 

Now, I've managed to remove the seal from my old cam cover, will try and re-use it with a smear of RTV.

 

Suprised no one has made a mould etc....I know Phillip M was thinking aboput it?!??

Now, I've managed to remove the seal from my old cam cover, will try and re-use it with a smear of RTV.

 

The trouble with using just sealant is that there are restrictors on the cam cover to stop you over tigthening the covers,so once the seals are removed you need a really thick line of sealant to replace the seal

I am still tempted to make a batch as it'll be pretty easy, some people have shown intrest allready.

 

I am going to get all the cost together for making...say 20 gasket's.

Have sealed mine with sealant spot on,but would rather have gaskets on there TBH

What sort of tempreture requirements do you think we will need for the gasket?

 

I know under bonnet temp's for the 6 are higher in some case's.

The engine never really exceeds 120 degrees does it ? Count me in anyway would be great. Thanks again

not sure on the actual temps, but dont forget that the rear cam cover is next to the exhaust manifold, find a thermometer and find out

Ive seen them get to 115 on the gauge, but was wondering about temps under bonnet, as the manifold lets of some serious heat.

 

I dont want to sell gasket that arnt up to the job, would rather have something overkill then something that will 'just' be good enough.
