Heater Resistor- What's This Bit?

My heater stopped working completely and I found it was the resistor again. I've cleaned up the disc in the pic above and it sort of works but moving the disc about greatly varies the speed of the fan.

My question is what does this disc do? I assume I can't fill the hole up with solder otherwise there wouldn't be this whole setup in the first place?

Also, does anyone still sell them new apart from Pug? GSF and ECP don't seem to do them.

That's the earth for the transistor, silly idea as it corrodes up over time. I tend to add a earth wire on the body, it bypass that then

Thanks Miles. So do you mean like this below or from the blob of solder to an earth on the car?

If there's a simple fix I'd rather do that. Aren't they £50? I don't know if the ebay ones are any good.

You wouldn't believe how much I've spent on cars in the last 6 months!

true id buy straight from dealer for the sake of a few quid you get a guarentee and buying off ebay in my experience is a risky business im sure miles will verify this :)

Yeah the one above is a 2nd hand one. It seems when everything is 20 years old all these parts are as bad as each other.

Worked a treat! Much better than just cleaning the contacts a bit.

Part number is 6445.90 I believe.

... btw for anyone repairing theirs, you can also bridge the earth track to the track to the left, this is how I did mine.
