Speedo Drive Question.

Recommended Posts

boldy205

when using a 306 Gti6 engine on the standard 306 injection loom, with a Mi16 box in a 205 Gti, which speedo drive do I need? After searching I've found I need a early S16 item, would just like to know if this is correct? If so does it incorporate the VSS or is this separate?

Thanks.

Matt

yep, you need the 3 pin dual VSS/speedo drive unit, as used by the S16 but not exclusively, I have found them on 1.4 phase1 306's as well.

use the 205 gear and pinion.

You get a horrible flat-spot just off idle if it's missing or faulty and can be more prone to stalling when you slow down.

(or rather, you usually do - some cars don't suffer the issue but most seem to)

281096026619 is the eBay No I've come up with, recon that's the one?

I only ask as I have the old style speed sensor on my turbo engine that has the 2 pin connector and its main use was for the variable power steering and electronic stability program in the car it came from, having none of that in my 205 I feel its not needed but I wired it up to the speed ecu properly anyway and it seems to make no difference with it plugged in or not.

Service box is showing 2 different ones here are the part numbers and prices from the main dealer
6160 24 £76.80
6160 70 £56.08

I dont know the difference between them but its worth risking a £10/£12 rather than £56/£76 I would of thought

I was curious about its function on a converted car too, good to hear everyone's findings thanks.

if the engine was from a 406 you need to add a 12v or an earth (I dont recall offhand) and use a 3 wire vss.

this is presuming you have the speed module to begin with, the engines ecu doesnt just rely on the speed sensor in the gearbox alone
