Cracked Cylinder Liner :(

Recommended Posts

DamirGTI

Hello !

I've fix my engine yesterday (the coolant was leaking inside one cylinder...) and it was one cylinder liner cracked (the 1 cylinder on the timing belt side.. you can see that cylinder liner on the picture..) which was causing water leaking inside the combustion chamber  ...

Also I've found that my expansion bottle pressure cap was faulty - it was leaking , not holding the coolant system pressurized B)

Anyhow i was wandering if i can blame this broken exp. bottle cap for cracking the cylinder liner ? me thinks that coolant inside the engine/block was boiled out (when i was switching off hot engine ..) and create steam pocket around that liner which cause liner metal surface stress -> overheating and cracking - does this make any sense ?!

I do not know the answer to your question, however that head gasket doesn't look very old to me, how long have you had the car? As wonder if someone put it back together knowing it had a crack in the liner and passed it on quick.

Hello !

I have this car for 5-6 years now and all this years I'm repairing/modifying all mechanic by myself :)

True , I've made only 4000-5000Km with this engine from the full rebuilding this year (I was extra careful on every detail – bought good quality spare parts , measuring - checking everything , tightening each and every bolt with torque wrench , I've assembly this engine in clean room with no dust also I've spend 3 bottles of "Brake Cleaner" spray for cleaning various engine parts prior to assembling ..)

I've measure the liner protrusion at least ten times for each liner and they where all fine - from 0.03 to 0.10mm

Well the thing is - this is modified engine with high CR flowed head etc. so the water temp. inside the engine around the cylinders must be a good bit higher than on the standard engine (and ignition timing was a bit retarded because of the wrong advance curve..) , also this summer was very hot here in my country air temp. was always around 38-39-40deg. outside :)

Me thinks that this exp. bottle pressure cap is the unlucky winner which creates this mess ..

Cheers ! B)
