Gti6 6 Speed Box Into A 205 Gti

Recommended Posts

johnrobertgordon

I cant seem to find a thread on this but has anyone put the gti6 box into the 205? My friend has aquired a 205 with an Mi16 that has bottom end issuies and has purchased a ph1 gti6 to take the engine from. Its just going to be used as an everyday car and he would really like the six speed box. Will it fit (i know its a big box), will there be problems with the steering? will a sorter ram be required? Any info would be helpfull thanks.

after a lot of reading up on this, there are a few issues.

you need to use Be1 equiptment, such as reverse cable and gear lever

also there is an issue of the gearbox fouling against something, steering rack maybe or wheel, as it is alot larger.

in short it will fit, but its not worth it! use the box from the mi on the '6

it will fit, but its 6 cm longer, hence you lose 6 cm of R/H lock, which requires a stop to be fitted to the steering rack, seen a jubilee clip used successfully!

6cm, thats quite a lot right. But it will only really effect things like 3 point turns and those most mamoth of loo's moment (of which if you need that extra 6cm your heading for a ditch anyhow)

I remember reading somewhere that it rubs on full lock.

Id say the Mi16 'box is best for a daily driver. You get the benifit of a short 1st, 2nd and 3rd and a long 4th and 5th. Or a VTS 'box is the same but stronger internals. The GTi-6 'box just has an extra gear in the middle not an extra cruising gear at the end, doesn't it?

i've done it. Though it was a very fun box its not one i'd do to an everyday car due to the steering issues.

The problem is the wheel will hit the gearbox casing unless you have some sort of stop on the steeringrack.

So to sum up it drops straight in but there are steering lock issuies that ar far from ideal on a road car. The ratios on the box are in no way a benefit on a road car due to them being geared towards acceleration rather than having the 6th speed as a crusing gear.

So its an ideal track box then?

I've been using one for a few months on the road and I really like it, you do lose a bit of lock but its not the end of the world.

The extra gear changes would just slow you down on track, six gears is useful and fun in a roadcar where you don't know what gear you will need for every corner unlike a track where you do.

Sounds like a good box for a rally car then.

As long as there are absolutely no right hand hairpins :P

Steering issues aside, I don't think they are as tough as the five speeds either so they might not take the abuse of a rally.

indeed, I dont see how the 6 speed box will slow you down on track particularly when you check the 0-100 times between the Xsara and the 306, vast differences once you reach 3rd 4th and 5th.

VTS and GTi-6 'boxes for sale here

Again, it says about the stronger internals in the VTS. I have one on my 205 and have no complaints at all. Apart from sometimes crunching into second when going for a fast gear change.

i think Maxi ran 1.6 hubs and the slightly wider track seemed more suitable for the gti-6 box.

The VTS box is no stronger than any other BE box, If I was to say anything slightly weaker due to the 5th gear pitch, The other gear's are basically the same as the Mi16, The only stronger part of the box is the case (As GTi6 etc), The reverse gear has also gone back to the older style of early BE1 and BE3's

wonder if, when using 309 sus parts, it would make the lock fouling problem a little less severe?

Miles, when you say the reverse has gone back to the older style, do you mean reverse is next to 1st? The reason is ask is that mine is below 5th, and if the VTS has it next to 1st then what 'box have i got??

Also, what's different with 5th gear compared to an Mi16 'box?

Not really, 309 wishbones only move the bottom of the wheel significantly but its the middle that hits the gearbox. I've never tried a six speed with 205 wishbones but I cant see it being any worse.

The steering issues even affect the 306 GTI-6 itself, which must be a good bit wider than a 205 - the 306 has about half a turn less right steering lock than left.

My 205 with a gti6 gearbox gets to full lock in just under one turn of the steering wheel to the right, thats with 309 wishbones if that actually makes any difference, also with a power steering rack.

Try driving around all day only using that amount of lock and see what u think, mine was a joke to start with but now im used to it im a 5 point turn specialist  .... its only really an issue in car parks, i have never had to stop and reverse on the road....

I use my car daily and dont find it a problem... only when i get laughed at when i go to get my tracking checked!
